Using Filters and Effects When Creating Minis

Using Filters and Effects When Creating Minis
How to browse, apply, and favorite filters and effects, and choose ones that fit your content
Filters and effects let you give your Minis a distinct visual style in just a few taps, whether you're going for a polished cinematic look, a playful animated overlay, or something that just makes the lighting in your room look a little better. This guide covers how to browse and apply filters and effects while recording, adjust their intensity, save your favorites, and choose effects that actually fit the content you're making.
Browsing and Applying Filters and Effects Open the Minis camera and look for the filters and effects tray, usually accessible with a swipe or a tap on an icon near the record button. Effects are typically grouped into categories such as color filters, beauty and lighting adjustments, animated overlays, and trending or seasonal effects. Scroll through the tray and tap any thumbnail to preview it live on your camera before you start recording, so you always know exactly how it will look in your finished Mini.
Filters and effects can be applied before you start recording or, in many cases, swapped between clips if you're shooting a multi-clip Mini. Tapping a new filter mid-project updates the preview instantly, so you can experiment freely without committing to a look until you're happy with it. If you decide you'd rather shoot without any effect at all, look for a "None" or "Original" option at the start of the filter tray to return to an unfiltered camera view.
Adjusting Intensity and Saving Favorites Many filters and effects include an intensity slider that appears after you select them, letting you dial a look in anywhere from a subtle touch to a fully stylized effect. Press and hold or tap the selected filter's icon to reveal the slider, then drag it to taste while watching the live camera preview update in real time. Once you find a combination you love, tap the star or favorite icon to pin it near the front of your tray, so it's the first thing you see the next time you open the camera.
  • Color filters: Adjust overall tone and mood, from warm and vibrant to muted and cinematic, applied across your whole frame
  • Lighting and beauty adjustments: Subtle enhancements to brightness, smoothness, or skin tone evenness that can be dialed up or down with the intensity slider
  • Animated overlays: Graphics, particles, or interactive elements layered on top of your video, often reacting to movement or sound
  • Trending effects: Time-limited or seasonal effects featured by Whistlr that tend to be popular in Discover and Flow at any given moment
  • Favoriting: Star any effect to keep it easily accessible at the front of your tray instead of scrolling to find it each time
The right effect doesn't just decorate a Mini — it sets the mood before a single word is spoken, which is exactly why it's worth a few extra seconds of experimenting before you hit record.
Choosing Effects That Fit Your Content: Not every effect belongs on every Mini. A heavily animated overlay might be perfect for a comedic skit but distracting on a quiet storytelling clip, while a subtle color filter can elevate almost any kind of content without overpowering it. Think about the mood you're going for before browsing the tray — calmer, more natural filters tend to suit talking-to-camera content, while bolder effects shine in fast-paced or music-driven Minis. It's also worth keeping an eye on what feels consistent with your own style, since viewers in Discover and Flow often come to recognize creators by a recognizable visual signature as much as by their content itself.
