Using Hashtags to Reach a Wider Audience
Hashtags are one of the simplest ways to put your posts in front of people who don't already follow you. By tagging a post with relevant keywords, you connect it to broader conversations happening across Chattr, Minis, and Discover, making it easier for interested users to find your content even if they've never seen your profile before.
Adding Hashtags to a Post
When writing a caption for a Chattr post, Imprint, or Minis video, type the # symbol followed by a word or short phrase with no spaces, such as #sunsetphotography or #homecooking. As you type, Whistlr suggests matching hashtags based on popularity and relevance, so you can tap a suggestion instead of typing the whole thing out. You can also add hashtags after the fact by editing your caption from the post's options menu.
Hashtags work by grouping together every post that uses the same tag, so when someone searches for or follows a hashtag, your post becomes part of that collection. This is how Discover and search surface content from accounts outside someone's existing network, giving smaller and newer accounts a real chance to be seen alongside more established creators.
How Many Hashtags to Use
There's no strict limit on hashtags, but more isn't always better. A focused set of 3 to 8 hashtags that accurately describe your post's subject, style, and location tends to perform better than a long list of generic or unrelated tags. Specific hashtags, like #vintagecameracollecting instead of just #photo, help you reach an audience that's genuinely interested in your content rather than a broad audience that's likely to scroll past it.
Mixing hashtag sizes can also help. Combining a couple of very popular, high-traffic hashtags with several smaller, niche ones gives your post a chance to surface in busy feeds while still standing out in smaller, more targeted ones where competition for attention is lower.
A good hashtag is a handshake with a stranger who already cares about what you're posting — it does more for your reach than shouting into a crowd that doesn't.
Finding Trending and Relevant Hashtags
Open Discover and tap the search bar, then switch to the Tags filter to browse hashtags that are currently trending across Whistlr. You can also tap any hashtag on someone else's post to open its dedicated page, where you'll see related hashtags listed alongside the top and recent posts using that tag. This is a useful way to find tags that fit your content's niche rather than guessing.
Once you land on a hashtag page, tap Follow to add it to your Flow. Posts using that hashtag will then appear in your personalized feed alongside content from accounts you follow, making it easy to keep up with a topic, hobby, or community without having to search for it every time.
- Adding a Hashtag: Type # plus a keyword in your caption, or tap a suggested tag as you type
- Hashtag Volume: Aim for a focused 3 to 8 relevant tags rather than a long, generic list
- Tag Mix: Combine a few popular hashtags with several niche ones to balance reach and relevance
- Browsing Tags: Use the Tags filter in Discover search to see what's trending right now
- Following a Hashtag: Tap Follow on any hashtag page to add its posts to your Flow
Hashtags work best when they honestly describe what's in your post. Tagging content with unrelated trending hashtags just to chase visibility usually backfires, since people who click through expecting one thing and find another are quick to scroll away without engaging.
