Changing Your Display Name
Your display name and your username might seem like the same thing, but they serve very different purposes on Whistlr. Your display name is the friendly, flexible label people see on your profile and in their feed — it can include spaces, emoji, and your full name if you'd like. Your username is your unique handle, the one preceded by an @ symbol that people use to mention or search for you directly. Understanding the difference makes it much easier to set up your profile the way you want it.
Display Name vs. Username: What's the Difference?
Your display name is shown prominently at the top of your profile, next to your posts, and in conversations — think of it as your everyday name on Whistlr. It can be as expressive as you'd like, including spaces, capitalization, emoji, and special characters, and it doesn't need to be unique since plenty of people may share the same one. Your username, by contrast, is your permanent identifier for the platform: it's unique to you, can't be duplicated by anyone else, and is what people type with an @ symbol when they want to mention or find you directly.
Because your display name isn't tied to mentions or search the way your username is, you have a lot of freedom with it. Many people use their full name, a nickname, a fun phrase, or even add an emoji to express their personality. Your username, on the other hand, stays more fixed since it's the consistent way friends, followers, and the app itself reference your account across mentions, links, and search results.
How to Change Your Display Name
To update your display name, go to Settings > Account > Edit Profile, tap the Display Name field, and enter the new name you'd like to use. Once you're happy with it, tap Save and the change appears across your profile and posts right away. There's no need to confirm your password for this change since your display name doesn't affect your account's security or how people search for you.
- Where to change it: Settings > Account > Edit Profile > Display Name.
- What's allowed: Spaces, emoji, capitalization, and most characters, within a reasonable length limit.
- What it doesn't affect: Your username, your profile link, and how people mention you all stay the same when you update your display name.
- How often you can change it: Display names can be updated fairly often, though Whistlr may briefly limit rapid, repeated changes to keep the experience stable for accounts you interact with.
A name should be able to grow and change with you, even while the way your friends find you stays exactly the same.
A Note on Changing Your Username: If you're looking to change your actual username rather than your display name, that's a separate setting found at Settings > Account > Username, and it comes with its own considerations since your username is what's used in your profile link and in mentions across the app. Because the two are independent, you can experiment freely with your display name at any time without worrying about affecting your username, your mentions, or how existing followers find your profile.
