Putting a relationship on your profile is a small act of trust. You're telling people who matters to you, and you're linking your account to someone else's. That's why keeping relationships on Whistlr safe has been part of the Relationships feature from the start. A relationship can't appear on anyone's profile until both people confirm it. A request can only come from someone you already follow back in the other direction. Either person can end the link at any time, and blocking, reporting, privacy settings, and AI-assisted moderation are all there when something goes wrong. Most relationships on Whistlr never need any of that. But the people who do need it shouldn't have to search for it in the middle of a hard moment. This article explains what Whistlr's relationship safety features actually do, how requests, visibility, and ending a relationship work, how to block and report someone who crosses a line, how to spot romance scams and impersonation, and the simple settings you can set up today to keep your relationship healthy and your account protected.
We've written about relationships on PX News before: why relationships mean a lot more here, what it meant when the feature crossed 10,000 users, and how business and personal relationships fit together. Those pieces were about why the feature exists. This one is practical. It walks through the safety rules built into Relationships today, the tools that sit around it, and what to do if a relationship, or someone pretending to want one, starts to feel wrong. Everything described here is live in the Whistlr app now.
Why Keeping Relationships on Whistlr Safe Matters
A relationship link isn't like a like or a comment. It connects two profiles in public, and it says something personal about both people. That makes it worth protecting in a few specific ways.
- It's about two people: A relationship on Whistlr belongs to both accounts. Neither person should be able to create it, describe it, or keep it alive without the other.
- It can be misused: On any social app, a relationship label can be used to claim someone, embarrass them, or pressure them. The rules around requests exist to close those doors.
- It attracts scammers: Romance scams start with a profile that feels too good to be true and a conversation that moves fast. Knowing the warning signs matters as much as any setting.
- Endings deserve care: Relationships change. When one ends, people need a clean, quick way to remove the link and, if needed, put distance between themselves and the other person.
None of this is meant to make Relationships feel heavy. Most people use the feature to celebrate something good. The safety rules are mostly invisible when things go well, and they're there to hold when things don't.
"A relationship on your profile is one of the most personal things you can share. We never wanted it to be something one person could do to another. Both people say yes, either person can end it, and the tools to protect yourself are a tap away. That's the deal, and we built the feature around it."

How Relationship Requests Work on Whistlr
Every relationship on Whistlr starts as a request. Nothing shows on either profile while a request is waiting. Here's how that request is protected.
Only someone who follows you can receive your request
You can only send a relationship request to someone who already follows you. If they don't, Whistlr stops the request and explains that the other person needs to follow you first. This is the follow-first rule we've talked about before, and it's still the single most important safety guardrail in the feature. A stranger can't find your profile and send you a relationship request out of nowhere, because the connection has to start with a choice you already made.
When you pick a partner from Edit relationship, the Select Partner list starts with your followers for the same reason.
One pending request between two people
Only one relationship request can be pending between the same two people at a time. If one is already waiting, the button shows Request pending instead of letting anyone send another. That means nobody can flood your notifications by sending the same request over and over.
Requests expire after 30 days
A relationship request that's left unanswered expires after 30 days. You never have to respond to a request you don't want, and an old request can't be accepted months later by accident.
One active relationship at a time
Whistlr allows one active relationship at a time. You can't send a request while you're already in a confirmed relationship, and you can't send one to someone who already is. That protects people in a relationship from being claimed by someone else, and it keeps what's on a profile honest.
Business partnerships follow the same rules
Business Partnerships use the same request system, with the same follow-first rule and the same mutual confirmation. The notification simply says the other person wants to partner with you in business. If you have an active business partnership, Whistlr asks you to end it before you change your personal relationship status.
Why Both People Have to Say Yes
Consent is the reason a relationship on Whistlr means anything. When someone sends you a request, you get a notification with two buttons: Accept and Decline. Relationship requests also show up on your Requests page, alongside friend requests, so they don't get lost in the rest of your notifications.
- If you accept: The relationship is created on both accounts at the same time, and the person who sent it is told you accepted.
- If you decline: The request is closed and nothing appears on either profile. The sender gets a private notification that it was declined. Nobody else is told anything.
- If you do nothing: The request simply sits there until it expires. You don't owe anyone an answer.
You choose the words, too. Relationship types range from Talking, Situationship, Dating, and Exclusive to In a relationship, Long distance, Engaged, Married, Life partners, In an open relationship, Polyamorous, It's complicated, In a civil union, In a domestic partnership, and Best friends. The in-between stages are there on purpose, so nobody has to describe something as more serious, or less serious, than it really is. Whatever the sender picks, the person receiving it sees exactly what they're agreeing to before they tap Accept.
Who Can See Your Relationship on Whistlr
Once a relationship is confirmed, it appears on both profiles. Tap it and you'll see a relationship card with both of your photos and, if you've added one, the date you got together. Changes show up live, so if a relationship is added or ended, the profile updates without anyone having to refresh.
Because a confirmed relationship shows on both profiles, the most important visibility decision happens before anyone taps Send. A few things to keep in mind:
- Talk first: Make sure you both actually want the relationship on your profiles. A request should never be how someone finds out you're ready to go public.
- The date is optional: "Together since" is something you add yourself in Edit relationship. Leave it blank if you'd rather not share it. When one of you sets it, it shows for both of you.
- Posting about it is your choice: You can write a post about your relationship if you want to mark the moment, but nothing forces you to announce it to your feed.
- Your posts follow your account privacy: If you have a private account, the posts and stories you share about your relationship stay behind the lock, visible only to friends you've approved.
If you're not ready for your relationship to be on your profile, the simplest safe choice is not to add it yet. There's no deadline. The feature will be there when you both want it.
Privacy Settings That Protect Your Relationships
The relationship rules work best alongside the rest of Whistlr's privacy settings. These are the ones that matter most for relationships, and they take a couple of minutes to set up.
Contact options
Contact options control who can reach you in direct messages. Under Who can message you, you can choose Everyone, People you follow, Verified accounts only, or No one. You can also turn off Allow group invites, so nobody can add you to a group conversation you didn't ask to join. If you've just come out of a relationship, or you're getting attention you didn't ask for, tightening this is one of the fastest ways to get some quiet.
Requests
Messages from people you aren't connected with don't land in your main inbox. They go to your Requests, where you can read them when you're ready, reply, or decline. That gives you a buffer between strangers and your actual conversations, which matters a lot when someone is trying to start a romance from nowhere.
Private account
As we covered when we redesigned locked accounts, turning on Private account means only people you approve can see your posts and stories and add you as a friend. Visitors who aren't approved see your photo, your counts, and a clear "This account is private" label, but not what you've shared. It's a good fit if your relationship posts are meant for people who actually know you.
How others can interact with you
In Privacy and safety, you can also decide who can tag and mention you (Everyone, Peers only, or No one), and whether people can see your activity status or when you were last active. If an ex or an unwanted admirer is watching for when you're online, turning off Show activity status and Show last seen removes that signal.
"Privacy settings shouldn't be something you only find after something bad happens. We want people to set them up on a good day, when they're happy and calm, so that on a hard day the protection is already there. That's why we keep the controls simple and easy to find."

How to End a Relationship on Whistlr
Either person can end a relationship on Whistlr at any time. You don't need the other person's permission, and you don't need to explain yourself.
- Go to your profile and tap Edit profile.
- Tap Relationship to open Edit relationship.
- Next to your partner's name, tap the remove button.
- Confirm End Relationship when Whistlr asks if you're sure.
You can also set your status back to Single, which ends the active relationship the same way. If you're ending a business partnership, the Partnerships section of the same screen has its own End option.
What happens when a relationship ends
- It ends for both of you: The relationship is removed from both profiles at the same moment. There's no situation where it disappears from your profile but stays on theirs.
- Pending requests are cancelled: Any relationship request still waiting between the two of you is cancelled, so nothing can be accidentally re-accepted later.
- Only the two of you are notified: Each of you gets a private notification that the relationship ended. Your followers don't get one, and nothing is posted to anyone's feed.
- You're free to move on: Once it's ended, you're no longer in an active relationship, so you can add a new one whenever you're ready.
Ending a relationship link doesn't unfollow anyone or block anyone. If you want more distance than that, the next section is for you.
When to Block Someone, and What Blocking Does
Sometimes ending a relationship isn't enough. If someone is harassing you, won't take no for an answer, or makes you feel unsafe, block them. Blocking is immediate and it's private.
How to block someone on Whistlr
- Go to their profile and open the profile options.
- Tap Block.
- Confirm on the sheet that appears.
What blocking does
- They can't see you: They won't be able to see your posts or your profile.
- They can't reach you: They won't be able to message you or mention you.
- You won't see them: You won't see their posts or get notifications from them.
- They aren't told: Whistlr doesn't notify someone that you've blocked them.
If you're ending a relationship and also want to block the other person, end the relationship first from Edit relationship, then block. That way the link is cleanly removed from both profiles before you cut off contact. You can always review the people you've blocked, and unblock anyone, from the Blocked list in your settings.
How to Report Harassment on Whistlr
Blocking protects you. Reporting helps protect everyone else, because it brings someone's behavior to our team's attention. You can block and report the same person, and when someone is harassing you, we encourage you to do both.
- Posts: Tap the menu on the post, choose Report, and pick a reason, such as It's spam or It's inappropriate.
- Stories: Open the story menu and choose Report. Story reasons include Bullying or harassment, Nudity or sexual activity, Hate speech or symbols, and Violence or dangerous organizations.
- Comments: Comments have their own Report option, so you can flag a single reply without reporting a whole post.
- Messages: In a chat, open the chat's info screen. You'll find Report a problem, plus a Privacy & Safety section with guides on reporting users and blocking.
Reports are confidential. We don't tell anyone who reported them. When someone breaks the Community Guidelines, the consequences can range from removing content to locking the account, and permanent bans are no longer tied to a single username, so they're built to hold when someone tries to come back with a new account.
How to Spot Romance Scams and Impersonation on Whistlr
Romance scams are one of the oldest tricks online. Someone builds a connection quickly, earns your trust, and then asks for something: money, gifts, personal details, or photos. Spam, scams, impersonation, and fraudulent identities are all against Whistlr's Community Standards, and the follow-first rule means a scammer can't simply send you a relationship request. But scams usually start in conversation, so it helps to know what to look for.
Warning signs of a romance scam
- It moves very fast: Big feelings, big promises, or talk of a future together within days of meeting.
- They always have a reason not to meet: They can't video chat, can't meet in person, and the excuses keep changing.
- They want to leave Whistlr: They push to move the conversation to another app or phone number early on.
- Money comes up: An emergency, a travel cost, a medical bill, or an "investment" that needs your help. Never send money, gift cards, or Gems to someone you haven't met and trusted in real life.
- They ask for private photos or personal information: Anything that could be used to embarrass you, pressure you, or get into your accounts.
- The profile feels thin: Very few posts, a brand-new account, no mutual connections, and photos that look like they belong to a model or a stock photo.
How to protect yourself from impersonation
Impersonation is when someone pretends to be another person, whether that's a celebrity, a creator, or someone you actually know. Look at the profile's history and connections before you trust it, and look for the verification badge on accounts that claim to be someone well known. If a "friend" messages you from a new account asking for something unusual, check with them some other way first. If you set Who can message you to Verified accounts only, unverified accounts can't message you at all.
If you think you're talking to a scammer or an impersonator, stop replying, don't send anything, report the account, and block it. If you've already sent money or shared something private, report the account right away and reach out to us at hq@etapx.pro.
How AI-Assisted Moderation Protects Your Messages
As we explained when we updated the Community Guidelines, Whistlr checks content before it reaches anyone else. That includes your messages. When someone sends a message, posts, comments, or shares a story, AI-assisted moderation checks the text, images, and sampled video frames before it goes out. Content that breaks the rules, like explicit nudity, graphic gore, or anything sexual involving a minor, doesn't get sent. The person who tried to send it sees a clear warning explaining that it breaks the Community Guidelines and wasn't shared.
This matters for relationships in a specific way. Unwanted explicit images are one of the most common forms of harassment people face in their inbox. Because the check happens before delivery, that content is stopped before it ever reaches you, not taken down after you've already seen it.
Moderation doesn't replace your own judgment, and it isn't designed to catch every bad intention. A scammer can be perfectly polite. That's why the warning signs above, and the block and report tools, still matter. As our guidelines say, your private messages stay private, and we don't use message content for ads. The safety checks are about stopping harm, not profiling you.
"The best moment to stop harassment is before it arrives. Checking messages before they're delivered means people don't have to see the worst things to be protected from them. But no system replaces your instincts. If something feels off, trust that feeling, block, and report. We'll take it from there."

How to Add a Relationship on Whistlr Safely, Step by Step
If you and your partner are ready to share your relationship, here's how to do it with your privacy and safety in place from day one.
- Talk about it first. Agree together that you both want the relationship on your profiles, and decide whether you want to add a date.
- Make sure they follow you. Relationship requests can only go to someone who already follows you.
- Send the request. Go to your partner's profile, open the profile options, and tap Send relationship request. Or go to Edit profile, tap Relationship, choose a status, and tap Select Partner.
- Choose the right type. Pick the status that honestly describes where you are. Your partner sees it before they accept.
- Let them accept. Your partner gets a notification with Accept and Decline. Nothing appears on either profile until they accept.
- Add the date if you want. In Edit relationship, tap Together since to add the date you got together, or leave it blank.
- Review your privacy settings. Check Contact options, your Private account setting, and who can tag and mention you, so they match how public you want to be.
Tips for Keeping Relationships on Whistlr Safe and Healthy
- Only accept requests you expected: If a relationship request surprises you, decline it or let it expire. You never owe anyone an answer.
- Talk before you tap: A confirmed relationship shows on both profiles, so it's a decision for two people.
- Keep your circle in mind: Use a private account if your relationship posts are meant for friends you've approved.
- Set Contact options on a good day: Decide who can message you and whether people can add you to group chats before you need to.
- End it cleanly: If a relationship ends, remove the link from Edit relationship. It ends for both of you and only the two of you are notified.
- End first, then block: If you need distance, end the relationship link, then block the person from their profile.
- Report, don't just ignore: Reporting harassment helps protect other people too, and reports are confidential.
- Never send money to someone you haven't met: Fast feelings plus a request for money is the classic romance scam.
- Check before you trust: Look at a profile's history, connections, and verification before believing it's who it says it is.
