Go Live on Whistlr Studio with OBS: RTMP Ingest, Title, End Stream
Whistlr Live Studio is a free RTMP ingest studio: you do not stream from the browser camera. You point OBS, Streamlabs, XSplit, Wirecast, vMix, or any other RTMP-compatible encoder at a Server URL and Stream Key that Studio issues for your account, watch a private preview until the encode looks right, then fill in Stream Information and confirm Go Live so one broadcast surfaces across Whistlr. There is no follower minimum and no subscription required to start. This guide walks you through Studio Credentials, encoder setup (including a full OBS walkthrough), title and category, going live everywhere, and ending the stream cleanly.
What Going Live on Whistlr Studio Actually Means
Going live is a deliberate two-stage process. First, your encoder publishes into Studio so only you can see the private program feed in the center preview. Second, you confirm Go Live after setting a title and category — that is the moment Studio distributes the same broadcast platform-wide. Starting the encoder alone never puts you in front of viewers. Ending the stream takes you offline on Whistlr even if the encoder keeps running into the private preview. Keep those stages separate in your mind and your checklist will stay simple.
Streaming is free on personal and business accounts. Monetization features such as Gems, live earnings, and withdrawals unlock with a verified Business+ account; they are not required to go live. A personal Whistlr ID can stream immediately. You will not see WTC or Earnings tabs until you apply for Business+ at partners.whistlr.business and the account is verified. Until then, Credentials can show a Business+ explainer you can Show or Hide. Streaming stays free either way.
Studio Credentials and RTMP Ingest
Open Creator LIVE Studio while signed in. Personal accounts land on Credentials automatically — Server URL and Stream Key are already on the page. Business accounts: stay on the Stream tab, then tap the Credentials chip under your title (next to Dashboard). You can also open Help in Studio and jump to Stream ingest for the same two values, with the same copy and reset actions. The card is labeled Studio Credentials. A Ready pill means your key is issued. Unavailable means Studio is still setting up — wait a moment, or tap Try Again on the preview if you see Studio unavailable.
- Server URL: The RTMP ingest address for this studio. Paste it as the custom server in your encoder. Safe to store in an encoder profile. Action: Copy.
- Stream Key: The private key that authorizes your encoder to publish into this studio. Hidden by default. Actions: Show, Hide, Copy.
- Ready pill: Your studio key is issued and ready to paste into a Custom RTMP service.
- Unavailable: Studio is still provisioning. Wait, or use Try Again on the preview if the UI says Studio unavailable.
How to Copy Credentials Safely
Copy the Server URL first — it is safe to keep in your encoder profile. On Stream Key, tap Show only when you are about to paste. Tap Hide when you are done. Copy the Stream Key and paste it only into the encoder’s stream-key field — never into chat, a stream title, a screenshot, a shared note, or a screen recording. If the key may have been shared, or you simply want a fresh pair, tap Reset Stream Key. Studio asks: “Reset stream key? You will need to paste the new key into your streaming software.” Confirm, then update the encoder before you hit Start Streaming again. The old key stops working the moment the new one is issued.
Treat the stream key as a secret. Anyone with the current key can publish into your studio — reset it if it may have been shared, and never put it where a screenshot or chat history can leak it.
Set Up OBS, Streamlabs, or Any RTMP Encoder
Whistlr is compatible with every major streaming app that speaks RTMP. Studio does not ship a branded encoder plugin. You use a Custom service and paste the two credentials from Studio. The product path is always the same four steps: open your streaming app, go to Settings → Stream → set Service to Custom, paste your Server URL and Stream Key, then hit Start Streaming — Studio picks it up as soon as the encode arrives. On the Credentials page those same steps read: open your preferred encoder, choose Custom RTMP as the stream service, paste the Server URL and Stream Key, then start streaming and come back to Studio to go live. OBS Walkthrough: Scenes, Stream, Output, and Video
Build a scene first: add Display Capture, Window Capture, or a Game Capture source, plus Mic/Aux and Desktop Audio. Name the scene so you can switch later. Then open Settings → Stream → Service = Custom. Server = your Studio Server URL. Stream Key = your Studio Stream Key. Apply. Next, Settings → Output → Output Mode = Advanced. Video Encoder = x264 or a hardware encoder (Apple VT, NVENC, Quick Sync). Rate Control = CBR. Keyframe Interval = 2. Audio Encoder = AAC. Finally, Settings → Video → pick a Base and Output canvas (1920×1080 or 1280×720) and 30 or 60 fps. Keep the output at a 16:9 ratio so the Studio preview fills the player. Click Start Streaming. Leave the encoder running. Switch back to Whistlr Live Studio and watch the center preview.
- 720p30: Video bitrate (CBR) about 2,500–4,000 kbps; audio AAC 160 kbps.
- 1080p30: Video bitrate (CBR) about 4,500–6,000 kbps; audio AAC 160–192 kbps.
- 1080p60: Video bitrate (CBR) about 6,000–8,000 kbps; audio AAC 192–320 kbps.
- Keyframe interval: 2 seconds for stable RTMP playback and preview recovery.
- Aspect ratio: Keep output 16:9 so the Studio center player is filled correctly.
These ranges are encoder hygiene, not Whistlr presets. Studio does not inject bitrate or encoder presets into OBS. Use them as starting points for a stable Custom RTMP publish. If the preview comes in but looks stuck, switch the encoder to H.264 Main or Baseline — that is the suggestion Studio shows when the preview needs a moment. Hardware encoders (Apple VT, NVENC, Quick Sync) are fully supported when your machine provides them; x264 software encode is fine when you prefer quality control over GPU offload.
Read the Preview Before You Go Live
The center preview is your health check. Ready when you are means Studio has not seen a publish yet — hit Start Streaming in the encoder. Almost there… means Studio found your stream and is setting up the preview. Preview is receiving means the center player is playing your program feed; you are still offline on Whistlr until you tap Go Live. Hang tight, we’re working on it means the encode is arriving but the preview needs a moment — try H.264 Main or Baseline. Stream ended means the encoder stopped; restart it anytime and Studio reconnects automatically. Encoder on and studio offline is expected: starting the encoder only feeds the private Studio preview. Viewers do not see you until you fill in Stream Information and confirm Go Live. Keep the encoder running the whole time you want to be live.
Stream Information: Title and Category
Title and category are required before Whistlr will take you live. They are how viewers find the broadcast in Flow, Highlights, Following, Discover, your profile, whistlr.network, and the iOS app. Open the Stream Information sheet from the white Go Live button on the preview, or by clicking the title line under the player while you are offline (it reads Add a title until you set one). Wait until the preview is receiving so you know the encoder is healthy. Tap Go Live — the sheet header is Stream Information. Title: type up to 100 characters. A live counter shows 0/100 through 100/100. The Go Live button in the sheet stays disabled until the title is more than whitespace. Category: open the picker, search if you want, and choose one row. Studio defaults to Just Chatting. Review both fields. Tap Go Live to distribute, or Cancel to keep editing without going live.

Write the title for discovery. Lead with the topic a stranger would search — game plus mode, song plus artist, or the lesson in one clause. Category is a filter, not a substitute for a specific title. You can reopen Stream Information from the title while you are still offline; after you are live the title line is display-only for this session. The character limit is 100, and the sheet button stays dimmed until the title has at least one non-space character.
Go Live Everywhere: Quick Start
Connect — copy Studio Credentials, paste them into a Custom RTMP service, and verify the Studio preview. Stream — start the encoder, wait for the Whistlr Live Studio preview, then set Title and Category in Stream Information. Go Live Everywhere — confirm Go Live to distribute the stream platform-wide, with monetization if it is unlocked on the account. You do not configure each surface separately; one confirmation is enough.
What Happens When You Confirm Go Live
The sheet button reads Starting… and then closes. A red LIVE pill appears in the Studio header. The same broadcast is surfaced to Flow, Highlights, Following, Discover, your profile, whistlr.network, and the iOS app. Under the player, the title you entered replaces Add a title. The meta line switches from Offline · Category to viewer count, watch time, and category. End stream appears next to your avatar row. Keep the encoder running. Visit Stream appears in the header once the stream is live and has been surfaced; it opens your public live page in a new tab so you can see what viewers see. Business accounts keep Dashboard (session analytics and, when unlocked, gems received) and Credentials. Personal accounts keep Credentials and can still chat and go live — they simply do not get the WTC or Earnings tabs.

- Credentials: Always available for Server URL, Stream Key, copy, show/hide, and reset.
If Go Live is disabled, check the title first. The purple Go Live control in Stream Information stays dimmed until the title has at least one non-space character. If Studio says there is no active studio key, stay on Credentials, wait for Ready, or tap Try Again on the preview, then open the sheet again. If the preview never leaves Ready when you are, confirm the encoder is actually streaming to the Custom server and that the stream key you pasted matches the current key in Studio — especially after a Reset Stream Key.
End the Stream
Ending the stream takes you offline on Whistlr. The encoder can keep publishing into the private preview, but viewers lose the live and cannot rejoin until you go live again with a new Stream Information pass. Tap End stream under the player (visible only while you are live). Read the confirm: “End stream? This takes you offline right now. Viewers will lose the live and cannot rejoin until you go live again.” Tap Cancel to stay live, or End stream to confirm. The LIVE pill and Visit Stream disappear. The title line returns to Add a title. The preview overlay comes back so you can start the next session.
- After End stream: Stop the encoder when you are done for the day so you are not still publishing into an offline studio.
- Another show: Keep or replace the Custom RTMP settings, hit Start Streaming, wait for preview, open Stream Information, and Go Live again.
- Key reset between shows: If you reset the stream key, paste the new key before the next Start Streaming. The previous key will not reconnect.
- No undo: Confirming End stream drops every current viewer. They must find the next live after you go live again.
Do not tap End stream to “refresh” a glitchy preview — fix the encoder (or switch to H.264 Main / Baseline) first, and only end when the show is actually over.
Recommended Pre-Show Checklist
Sign in to Creator LIVE Studio and confirm Studio Credentials shows Ready. Copy Server URL into your encoder’s Custom service; show, copy, and paste Stream Key only into the stream-key field, then hide it again. Build or select your OBS scene with capture, mic, and desktop audio. Set Service to Custom, apply CBR encode with keyframe interval 2, and choose a 16:9 output at 720p or 1080p. Start Streaming in the encoder and wait until the Studio preview reads Preview is receiving. Open Stream Information, set a specific title under 100 characters and a category, then confirm Go Live. Watch for the red LIVE pill, use Visit Stream if you want a public check, keep the encoder running, and when you are finished confirm End stream — then stop the encoder for the day.

Studio unavailable or no Ready pill: wait for provisioning, or tap Try Again on the preview. Preview stuck on Ready when you are: confirm Start Streaming in the encoder and that Server URL and Stream Key match Studio. Preview stuck after receiving: try H.264 Main or Baseline and keep CBR with keyframe interval 2. Go Live dimmed: add a non-whitespace title. Accidental key exposure: Reset Stream Key immediately, confirm the dialog, paste the new key into the encoder, then Start Streaming again. Accidental End stream: there is no undo — start the encoder, wait for preview, set Stream Information, and Go Live again when you are ready for the next session.
