Whistlr Studio FAQ: Going Live, Free Streaming, OBS, and Stream Keys
This FAQ answers the questions creators ask most before their first Whistlr Live Studio broadcast: Is streaming free? Do I need followers? How do I go live for the first time? What encoder do I need? Every answer below is drawn from how Creator Live Studio actually ships—no follower gate, no subscription to broadcast, and monetization kept as a separate optional track.
Is streaming on Whistlr free?
Yes. Whistlr Live Studio is free to use. There is no subscription and no follower minimum. Create a Whistlr ID, open Creator Live Studio at /creator-studio, and you can go live in minutes—even if nobody follows you yet. The product lives at whistlr.studio. The social network that carries your broadcast is whistlr.network. Both are built by ETAProjects Inc. (ETAPX). Streaming unlocks the moment the ID exists. Gems, live earnings, and withdrawals stay locked until a verified Business+ account is in place. That split is intentional: go live first, apply when the room is worth cashing out.
Free to stream, paid when you earn—there is no follower gate and no monthly Studio fee.
Do I need a follower minimum to go live?
No. There is no follower gate to open a room, stay on air, or stream around the clock. Discovery on Flow, Highlights, Following, Discover, your profile, whistlr.network, and the iOS app does not require a circle size before Go Live works. You can build an audience for $0. Business+ verification is only required when you want viewers to send Gems and when you want those Gems to become bank payouts—not when you want to broadcast.
How do I go live for the first time?
Going live is two distinct actions. First your RTMP encoder publishes into Studio so you can see yourself in the private preview. Then you tap Go Live, fill Stream Information, and confirm. Until you confirm, viewers on whistlr.network and the iOS app cannot join—the preview is only for you. That is how you check framing, audio, and the title before the room opens. Do not skip the preview. If you tap Go Live before the encoder is publishing, viewers can land on a dark room.
- Create or sign in: Open /signup for a free Whistlr ID (18+), or /login if you already have one. Finished signup lands in Creator Live Studio—no separate streamer application is required just to broadcast.
- Copy Studio Credentials: Under the preview, open Credentials. Copy Server URL and Stream Key. Treat the key as a secret; Show only when pasting, then Hide again.
- Point an RTMP encoder: In OBS, Streamlabs, XSplit, Wirecast, vMix, or any RTMP app, set Service to Custom. Paste Server URL and Stream Key. Use H.264 Main or Baseline. Hit Start Streaming.
- Wait for preview: Studio should move from “Ready when you are” to a live picture (“We found your stream…”). Fix codec or reconnect if the preview errors.
- Stream Information: Tap Go Live. Title is required (up to 100 characters)—confirm stays disabled until you type one. Category is searchable; if you skip it, Studio uses Just Chatting.
- Confirm Go Live: One action distributes the same broadcast platform-wide. You do not configure each surface.
While you are live, the meta line under your name shows viewer count, watch time, and category. Tap End stream when you are done—Studio warns that viewers lose the live and cannot rejoin until you go live again. Confirm only when you mean it. There is no session cap. Categories include Just Chatting, Music & Performance, Gaming, Art & Creative, Beauty & Fashion, Fitness & Sports, Cooking & Food, Educational, IRL, Tech & Dev, Business & Finance, Comedy & Entertainment, Podcast & Talk Show, DIY & Lifestyle, Animals & Pets, Travel & Adventure, Spiritual & Mindfulness, and Other.
What encoder do I need — can I use OBS?
Yes. Whistlr Live Studio is a free RTMP ingest studio. You do not stream from the browser camera. You point OBS, Streamlabs, XSplit, Wirecast, vMix, or any other RTMP-compatible encoder at the Server URL and Stream Key Studio issues for your account. Studio does not ship a branded encoder plugin. Use a Custom (or Custom RTMP) service, paste both credentials, then Start Streaming and return to Studio to confirm the preview before you open the room.
How do I set up my Server URL and stream key?
Open Creator LIVE Studio while signed in. Personal accounts land on Credentials automatically—Server URL and Stream Key are already on the page. Business accounts: stay on the Stream tab, then tap the Credentials chip under your title (next to Dashboard). You can also open Help in Studio and jump to Stream ingest for the same two values. A Ready pill means your key is issued. Unavailable means Studio is still setting up—wait, or tap Try Again if you see Studio unavailable. Copy the Server URL into your encoder profile. Show the Stream Key only when you are about to paste, copy it into the encoder’s stream-key field, then Hide it. Never paste the key into chat, a title, a ticket, or a screenshot.
- Server URL: The RTMP ingest address for this studio. Safe to store in your encoder profile. Copy from Credentials or Help → Stream ingest.
- Stream Key: The private key that authorizes your encoder to publish into this studio. Hidden by default. Show, Hide, Copy, and Reset Stream Key are available on the same card.
- If the key leaked: Tap Reset Stream Key, confirm the prompt, and paste the new key into your streaming software immediately. The old key stops working as soon as the reset finishes. Do not reuse a leaked key.
- Quick setup reminder: Open encoder → Service = Custom → paste Server URL and Stream Key → Start Streaming → wait for Studio preview → set Title and Category → Go Live.
Where does my stream appear after I hit Go Live?
One Go Live distributes the same broadcast platform-wide: Flow, Highlights, Following, Discover, your profile, whistlr.network, and the iOS app. Chat, viewer count, and (if Business+ is verified) the Gems rail all attach to that session. You are not running six destinations—you are running one Studio session the network already knows how to surface. Title and category feed discovery labels and your profile card next to the viewer count, so pick a title people can scan in a feed (“Late lo-fi set,” not “test”) and a category that matches what is actually on camera.
Goal for a first sitting: a cold Whistlr ID to a public live on whistlr.network. You need the ID, an RTMP encoder, and a title. Everything else—Business+, Gems, custom Gem names—can wait until the second session. Setup checklist before you tell anyone you are live
Required to go live: create a free Whistlr ID (18+), open Creator Live Studio, copy Server URL and Stream Key, point an RTMP encoder at Custom, confirm Studio preview is receiving, set Title (≤100) and Category, then tap Go Live to publish the room. Optional for earning only: apply for Business+ at partners.whistlr.business, finish payment setup in Whistlr Go, and publish at least one Gem on the WTC tab. Streaming never waits on the optional column. You are ready when the preview is up and Go Live is enabled.
- Age and account: You must be 18 or older. Age verification is part of signup. Use a working email for the 6-digit code; /resume-signup finishes a half-complete ID.
- Password: At least 6 characters, one capital letter, and one special character.
- Browser: Any modern desktop browser. Studio is browser-based; the encoder is separate software.
- Gems on this stream: Viewers send Gems while you are live, not after. Cash out typically hits your bank in 1–2 business days with no 30-day hold—after Business+ and Whistlr Go are done. Without them, the stream still runs; the room just cannot pay you yet.
Encoder first, then Go Live. Starting the encoder alone is not enough—confirm Stream Information to put the room on whistlr.network.
