Whistlr Studio Encoder Setup: Bitrate, CBR, and Stream Keys
Set Custom RTMP bitrate and AAC audio, keep a two-second keyframe, secure and reset your Studio stream key, and read preview status before Go Live.
Stable Whistlr Live Studio publishes start with encoder hygiene: Custom RTMP credentials, CBR video bitrate matched to resolution and frame rate, AAC audio, a two-second keyframe interval, and a stream key treated like a password. This guide focuses on Server URL and Stream Key handling, bitrate and codec starting points for OBS and other RTMP apps, preview status language that tells you the encode is healthy, and when to reset a key — without repeating the full Go Live and End stream walkthrough covered elsewhere.
Why bitrate and keys matter before Go Live Whistlr Live Studio is a free RTMP ingest studio. You do not stream from the browser camera. Your encoder — OBS, Streamlabs, XSplit, Wirecast, vMix, or any RTMP-compatible app — publishes into a private Studio preview using a Server URL and Stream Key issued for your account. Bitrate, codec profile, and keyframe settings decide whether that preview stays smooth. The stream key decides who is allowed to publish into your studio at all. Get both right before you open Stream Information and confirm Go Live.
Studio does not inject bitrate presets or branded encoder plugins into OBS. You always choose Custom as the stream service, paste credentials from Studio Credentials, and apply encode settings yourself. The ranges in this article are starting points for a stable Custom RTMP publish — encoder hygiene, not Whistlr-locked presets. If the preview arrives but looks stuck, switch the video encoder to H.264 Main or Baseline; that is the suggestion Studio surfaces when the preview needs a moment.
Studio Credentials: Server URL and Stream Key Open Creator LIVE Studio while signed in. Personal accounts land on Credentials automatically. Business accounts stay on the Stream tab and tap the Credentials chip under the title (next to Dashboard). You can also open Help in Studio and jump to Stream ingest for the same two values. The card is labeled Studio Credentials. A Ready pill means your key is issued. Unavailable means Studio is still setting up — wait a moment, or tap Try Again on the preview if you see Studio unavailable.
  • Server URL: The RTMP ingest address for this studio. Paste it as the custom server in your encoder. Safe to store in an encoder profile. Action: Copy.
  • Stream Key: The private key that authorizes your encoder to publish into this studio. Hidden by default. Actions: Show, Hide, Copy.
  • Ready pill: Key is issued and ready to paste into a Custom RTMP service.
  • Unavailable: Studio is still provisioning. Wait, or use Try Again on the preview.
Copy, hide, and reset the stream key safely Copy the Server URL first — it belongs in your encoder profile. On Stream Key, tap Show only when you are about to paste, then tap Hide when you are done. Paste the key only into the encoder’s stream-key field — never into chat, a stream title, a screenshot, a shared note, or a screen recording. If the key may have been shared, or you simply want a fresh pair, tap Reset Stream Key. Studio asks: “Reset stream key? You will need to paste the new key into your streaming software.” Confirm, update the encoder, then hit Start Streaming again. The old key stops working the moment the new one is issued.
Treat the stream key as a secret. Anyone with the current key can publish into your studio — reset it if it may have been shared, and never leave it visible in a capture or chat history.
Custom RTMP setup in any encoder Whistlr is compatible with every major streaming app that speaks RTMP. Open your encoder, go to Settings → Stream (or the equivalent), set Service to Custom, paste your Server URL and Stream Key, then hit Start Streaming. Studio picks up the encode as soon as it arrives. On the Credentials page the same path reads: open your preferred encoder, choose Custom RTMP, paste both values, start streaming, and return to Studio to go live. Either wording is one path.
OBS output and video settings that keep the preview healthy After scenes and captures are ready, open Settings → Stream → Service = Custom, paste Server URL and Stream Key, and Apply. Then Settings → Output → Output Mode = Advanced. Video Encoder = x264 or a hardware encoder (Apple VT, NVENC, Quick Sync). Rate Control = CBR. Keyframe Interval = 2. Audio Encoder = AAC. In Settings → Video, pick a Base and Output canvas at 1920×1080 or 1280×720 and 30 or 60 fps. Keep output at a 16:9 ratio so the Studio center player fills correctly. Click Start Streaming, leave the encoder running, and watch the Studio preview.
  • 720p30: Video bitrate (CBR) about 2,500–4,000 kbps; audio AAC 160 kbps.
  • 1080p30: Video bitrate (CBR) about 4,500–6,000 kbps; audio AAC 160–192 kbps.
  • 1080p60: Video bitrate (CBR) about 6,000–8,000 kbps; audio AAC 192–320 kbps.
  • Keyframe interval: 2 seconds for stable RTMP playback and preview recovery.
  • Aspect ratio: Keep output 16:9 so the Studio center player is filled correctly.
  • Codec fallback: If preview looks stuck after receiving, try H.264 Main or Baseline.
Hardware encoders (Apple VT, NVENC, Quick Sync) are fully supported when your machine provides them. Software x264 is fine when you prefer quality control over GPU offload. Stay on CBR for live RTMP; variable rate control that spikes and drops is a common cause of choppy preview. Match bitrate to your upload headroom — if the uplink cannot sustain the chosen CBR, lower resolution or bitrate before you chase other settings. Audio stays AAC in the ranges above so chat and music do not starve the video encode.
Read preview status before you touch Go Live The center preview is your encode health check. Ready when you are means Studio has not seen a publish yet — hit Start Streaming in the encoder. Almost there… means Studio found your stream and is setting up the preview. Preview is receiving means the center player is playing your program feed; you are still offline on Whistlr until you confirm Go Live. Hang tight, we’re working on it means the encode is arriving but the preview needs a moment — try H.264 Main or Baseline. Stream ended means the encoder stopped; restart it anytime and Studio reconnects automatically.
Encoder on and studio offline is expected. Starting the encoder only feeds the private Studio preview. Viewers do not see you until Stream Information and Go Live.
Encoder troubleshooting snapshot Studio unavailable or no Ready pill: wait for provisioning, or tap Try Again on the preview. Preview stuck on Ready when you are: confirm Start Streaming and that Server URL and Stream Key match Studio — especially after a Reset Stream Key. Preview stuck after receiving: switch to H.264 Main or Baseline, keep CBR, and keep keyframe interval at 2. Choppy or pixelated preview: drop toward the low end of the bitrate band for your resolution, or move from 1080p60 to 1080p30 / 720p30 until the uplink is stable. Accidental key exposure: Reset Stream Key immediately, confirm the dialog, paste the new key, then Start Streaming again.
  • Do not End stream to “refresh” a glitchy preview: Fix the encoder first; End stream drops every viewer with no undo.
  • Keep the encoder running: While you are live, the encode must stay up. Stopping the encoder ends the program feed even if you forget to tap End stream.
  • Between shows: If you reset the key, paste the new key before the next Start Streaming. The previous key will not reconnect.
  • Stop when done for the day: Ending the Whistlr session and stopping the encoder avoids publishing into an offline studio overnight.
Pre-encode checklist (credentials and bitrate only) Sign in and confirm Studio Credentials shows Ready. Copy Server URL into Custom service; show, copy, and paste Stream Key only into the stream-key field, then hide it. Set CBR with keyframe interval 2, AAC audio, and a 16:9 output at 720p or 1080p using the bitrate bands above. Start Streaming and wait until Preview is receiving.
