Direct Messaging and Private Communication
Using Whistlr's messaging features for private conversations
Whistlr's direct messaging system provides secure, feature-rich private communication between users. Whether you're having one-on-one conversations, coordinating with groups, or managing business communications, our messaging platform offers the tools and security features you need for effective private interaction. All messages are encrypted in transit and stored securely with comprehensive privacy controls.
Starting Conversations: Connecting Privately Initiate direct messages by tapping the message icon on any user's profile, selecting "New Message" from the messages tab, or responding to existing message threads. You can message any user unless they've restricted messages to followers only or blocked you. Group messages support up to 50 participants for coordinated conversations. Message requests from users you don't follow appear in a separate inbox for review before accepting.
Messaging features include text messages with rich formatting, photo and video sharing with in-app viewing, voice messages with playback controls, file attachments up to 100MB, link previews with metadata, emoji reactions to individual messages, message threading for organized conversations, read receipts (can be disabled), typing indicators, and message search across all conversations. These features create a comprehensive communication platform that rivals dedicated messaging apps.
Privacy and Security in Messaging Control who can message you through privacy settings: everyone, followers only, or no one. Enable disappearing messages that automatically delete after a set time (1 hour to 7 days). Report inappropriate messages using the report button in any conversation. Block users to prevent all communication. Download message history for your records. Messages are encrypted in transit using TLS protocols and stored securely on our servers with access controls and audit logging.
  • Message Requests: Review messages from non-followers before accepting, decline requests to prevent future messages, report spam or harassment, and accept to move conversation to main inbox
  • Group Messaging: Create groups with up to 50 participants, name groups and set group images, add or remove participants, assign admin roles, and configure group settings including who can send messages
  • Media Sharing: Send photos and videos with compression options, share files and documents, record and send voice messages, and share posts or profiles directly in conversations
  • Message Management: Delete messages for yourself or everyone, edit sent messages within 15 minutes, pin important conversations, archive old conversations, and search message history
  • Notifications: Customize notification sounds per conversation, mute conversations temporarily or permanently, enable priority notifications for important contacts, and configure notification previews
  • Business Messaging: Business accounts can use messaging for customer service, send automated welcome messages, create quick replies for common questions, and track response times
  • Video and Voice Calls: Initiate voice or video calls from any conversation, support for group calls up to 8 participants, screen sharing for collaboration, and call recording with participant consent
  • Message Backup: Messages sync across all devices, export message history for backup, and restore messages when logging in on new devices
Private communication is fundamental to meaningful relationships, and we take the security and privacy of your messages seriously. While we don't offer end-to-end encryption by default (to enable features like cloud sync and search), we provide robust security measures, transparent privacy controls, and optional disappearing messages for sensitive conversations. We never sell message data, never use message content for advertising, and only access messages when legally required or to investigate reported violations.
Message Retention and Data Handling: Messages are retained indefinitely unless you delete them or enable disappearing messages. Deleted messages are removed from our servers within 90 days. We may retain message metadata (sender, recipient, timestamp) for longer periods for security and legal compliance. You can download your complete message history through data export tools. Messages from deleted accounts are preserved in your inbox but show as from "Deleted User."
Reporting and Safety in Messages Report inappropriate messages by tapping the report button in any conversation. Select the violation type, provide context if helpful, and submit. Reported messages are reviewed by our safety team typically within 24 hours. The reporter remains anonymous. Serious violations may result in account suspension or permanent ban. Block users to prevent all future communication. We take harassment, threats, and inappropriate content in messages as seriously as public content violations.
Business Communication Best Practices: For businesses using messaging, respond promptly to customer inquiries (aim for under 1 hour), use professional language and tone, provide clear information and solutions, respect customer privacy and data, obtain consent before sending promotional messages, and maintain conversation history for customer service quality. Automated messages should be clearly identified, and customers should have easy opt-out options for promotional communications.
