Why Aren't My Notifications Working?
Missing notifications are one of the most common — and most fixable — issues users run into on Whistlr. Whether you're not getting alerts for new messages, Live notifications from people you follow, or Pod activity, the cause usually comes down to a setting somewhere between the app and your device rather than anything being broken. This checklist walks through every layer where notifications can get silently blocked, starting with the most common culprits first.
Check Your In-App Notification Settings First
Open Whistlr and navigate to your notification preferences from the settings menu. Confirm that the specific category you're expecting — messages, Live alerts, Pod activity, comments, followers, and so on — is actually toggled on. It's easy to have turned off a category at some point and forgotten about it, especially after an app update that may have reset or reorganized these preferences. Review each category individually rather than assuming a single master switch covers everything.
Many users assume an issue is a bug when it's actually a setting they adjusted previously, or a default that doesn't match what they expect. Taking two minutes to walk through every notification toggle in the app resolves a large share of reported notification problems without needing any further troubleshooting.
Check Your Phone's System-Level Permissions
Even when in-app settings look correct, your device has its own separate permission system that controls whether any app is allowed to send notifications at all. Open your phone's main settings app, find Whistlr in the list of installed apps, and check its notification permission. Make sure notifications are allowed, and that any sub-options — such as banners, sounds, lock screen display, or notification grouping — are enabled the way you want them. If this permission was ever denied, either during initial setup or later on, no in-app setting can override it.
- System Notification Permission: Confirm notifications are allowed for Whistlr in your device's app settings, not just inside the app itself
- Do Not Disturb / Focus Modes: Check whether a Focus mode, Do Not Disturb schedule, or silent hours setting on your device is currently active and suppressing notifications from all apps, including Whistlr
- Battery Optimization Settings: Many devices include a battery-saving feature that restricts background activity for apps you don't open frequently. If this is enabled for Whistlr, it can silently delay or block notifications from arriving even though everything looks correctly configured
- Background App Refresh: Confirm that background refresh or background data is enabled for Whistlr in your device settings, since some notifications rely on the app being able to check for updates while closed
- Low Power or Battery Saver Mode: If your device is in a low-power mode, notifications and background activity are often reduced automatically to extend battery life until the mode is turned off
- Wifi and Mobile Data Access: Check that Whistlr has permission to use data in the background, since some devices allow foreground-only access by default for apps that aren't used constantly
Notifications depend on every layer agreeing to allow them, and a single restrictive setting anywhere along that chain is enough to silently block them all.
Restart as a Quick Reset: After adjusting any of the settings above, restart your device rather than just closing and reopening the app. A full restart ensures that updated permissions and background activity settings are properly applied, since some changes don't take effect until the device refreshes its running processes.
Reinstalling as a Last Resort: If you've checked every setting above and notifications still aren't coming through, uninstalling and reinstalling Whistlr can resolve issues tied to a corrupted local app state. Keep in mind that reinstalling will reset any in-app notification preferences back to their defaults, so plan to revisit your settings afterward. If the problem continues even after a clean reinstall, contact support with details about your device type and operating system so the issue can be investigated further.
