How to Block and Unblock a User
Blocking is the most direct way to cut off contact with someone on Whistlr. When you block a user, you immediately stop seeing each other's content, lose the ability to message one another, and disappear from each other's search results. Knowing how to block quickly, where to manage your block list, and how unblocking works gives you confidence to use this tool whenever you need it, without worrying that the other person will be notified or able to track you down through another part of the app.
Blocking From a Profile
Open the profile of the account you want to block, tap the three-dot menu in the top corner, and select Block. Confirm the action when prompted, and the block takes effect right away. You don't need to follow, unfollow, or interact with someone first — blocking works on any account you can view, including ones outside your In Circle.
Blocking From a Comment or Message
You don't have to leave what you're doing to block someone. Press and hold a comment on a post or Imprint to bring up a quick-action menu with a Block option. In Replyd, open the conversation, tap the person's name or photo at the top, then choose Block from their profile menu. Both paths take you to the same confirmation step and apply the block instantly across Chattr, Minis, Pods, and group chats.
What Changes Once You Block Someone
Blocking is mutual in effect even though only you took the action. The blocked account can no longer view your profile, posts, Stories, or Imprints, send you messages through Replyd, tag or mention you, or find your account in search. You'll stop seeing their content across Chattr, Minis, Discover, and Nearby as well. If you're in a shared Pod or group chat, you'll still both technically belong to that space, but your individual posts and messages to each other inside it are hidden from one another.
Blocking does not delete your existing follow relationship in a way that's visible to anyone else, and it doesn't notify the other person. They simply find that your account is no longer reachable or visible, the same way it would look if you had deactivated or never existed to them. If you were following each other before the block, that connection is automatically removed and won't be restored if you later unblock them.
- Viewing your block list: Go to Settings > Privacy > Blocked Accounts to see everyone you've blocked, sorted by the date you blocked them.
- Searching the list: Use the search bar at the top of the Blocked Accounts screen if you've blocked a lot of people and need to find a specific username quickly.
- Unblocking: Tap a name on the list, then tap Unblock and confirm. The person regains the ability to find and contact you, but you are not automatically refollowed.
- Re-blocking: If you unblock someone and change your mind, you can block them again at any time using the same steps from their profile.
You should never have to negotiate with your own comfort online — blocking exists so that closing a door on an unwanted interaction is fast, private, and entirely within your control.
It's worth knowing the difference between blocking and other tools available on Whistlr. Muting hides someone's content from you without alerting them or removing the connection, which is useful for accounts you'd rather not interact with but don't need to fully cut off. Reporting flags content or behavior for review by Whistlr and can be done independently of blocking. Many people use these tools together: report harmful behavior, then block the account so you don't have to see or hear from them while the report is reviewed.
If you're blocking someone out of a safety concern rather than simple preference, consider also reviewing your broader privacy settings, such as who can see your posts, who can tag you, and whether your account is public or private. Blocking handles one relationship at a time, while your privacy settings shape who can reach you in the first place.
