Whistlr version 6: the new side drawer, a Create sheet that opens into a Note, the Explore grid with autoplay, photo Minis that never repeat, Post Detail and comments, Profile Sneak Peek, iPad two panes, and the web.

Whistlr version 6 is the biggest change to how the app feels in your hand since Version 4, and most of it lives in places you touch every day. There's a new side drawer that slides the whole app aside, a Create sheet that opens straight into writing, an Explore grid that previews videos for you as you scroll, and a Post Detail screen built around conversation. Profiles now have a quick preview sheet, Search and Messages open ready to use, and iPad finally gets two panes side by side. None of this asks you to start over. Your posts, friends, Havens, and settings are exactly where you left them. What's changed is how quickly you can get from one place to the next. This article explains what's new in Whistlr V.6, how each new screen and gesture works, where to find the things you use most, and the habits that will make the update feel familiar in a few minutes.

When Version 4 dropped, we wrote that it was the release where Whistlr's pieces finally started talking to each other. Version 6 is about the next step: making those connections easy to reach. Version 6.0 reached its fifth build on October 20, 2026, and 6.1 was submitted at the end of October for iPhone and for Android. Since then, smaller improvements have kept arriving through over-the-air updates, so a few things in this guide are the newest pieces still rolling out. Where something only exists on one device, or isn't live yet, we say so.

What's New in Whistlr Version 6?

If you only read one section, make it this one. Here's the short version of what changed between the 5.x releases and Whistlr version 6, in the order you're likely to run into it.

  • A side drawer: Swipe right for shortcuts, Account Center, and five trending hashtags that change every time.
  • A faster Create sheet: Create opens straight into a Note, with other modes one swipe away.
  • An Explore grid that moves: Video tiles preview themselves as you scroll, and the grid refreshes while you're away.
  • Photo Minis that never repeat: Once you've seen a photo post in Minis, it's gone for good.
  • Post Detail built for conversation: A pinned top bar, comment sorting, and a "Comment as" bar.
  • Profile Sneak Peek: Tap an avatar for a preview sheet that grows into the full profile.
  • Screens that open ready: Search, Friends, and Messages load from your phone first.
  • iPad and web: Two panes on iPad, and a web version that lines up with the app.

"Every time we add something to Whistlr, there's a risk it ends up three taps deep where nobody finds it. Version 6 is us going back through the app and asking, where does your thumb actually want to go? The drawer, the Create sheet, the Sneak Peek, they all come from that one question. We want the app to feel like it's already a step ahead of you."

How to Get Around the Home Screen in Whistlr V.6

The bottom of the app hasn't moved. You still have five tabs: Home, Search, Create, Messages, and Profile. What's changed is what sits along the top of Home and how the pages there are named.

The Top Nav: Trending, Notes, Explore, and Flow

Whistlr opens on Trending, the full-screen Minis feed. Swipe left across the top nav and you move through the other Home pages:

  • Trending: Full-screen Minis, where the app lands when you open it. Swipe up for the next clip.
  • Notes: The single-column feed of text posts, photos, community posts, and live streams, with your Stories along the top. Cards now load complete instead of growing on screen.
  • Explore: The grid of photos and videos to discover. More on how it works below.
  • Flow: Live streams, with a large banner up top and shelves of what's live right now.

Along the top of Home you'll also find Notifications, a Find friends button, and a LIVE button that takes you to going live. In the Notes feed, posts that use a hashtag found on more than 100 posts show a small "› #Topic" tag beside the author's name, and hashtags past 4,500 posts get a highlighted row above the post.

How to Open the New Side Drawer on Whistlr

The side drawer is the headline gesture of Whistlr version 6. When you open it, the whole app, bottom bar included, slides to the right like a card and dims, and the drawer appears underneath.

Opening and Closing It

  • From Minis: Swipe right on the Trending page.
  • From Messages: Swipe right on your chat list. You now switch between Solo and Groups by tapping.
  • From other tabs: Swipe in from the left edge of the screen.
  • Closing: Tap the app card on the right, or swipe it back to the left.

On iPhone the drawer works in portrait. On iPad it works in any orientation and stays phone-width so it doesn't take over a big screen.

What's Inside the Drawer

At the top is your account: your photo beside your name, your badges, your handle, and your Friends and Peers counts, which open those lists when you tap them. Below that is a short list of shortcuts, and the list adjusts to the kind of account you have.

  • For everyone: Edit profile, Bookmarks, Hashtag favorites, and Drafts.
  • Verified creators and businesses: An Insights row that opens your professional dashboard.
  • Business accounts: Creator Wallet and Ads.
  • Everyone else: A Monetize row with an "Apply now" pill that opens the Whistlr for Business application directly.
  • Account Center: At the bottom of the list, for settings and account tools.

Underneath the shortcuts is a Trending section. It shows five hashtags that each have more than 1,000 posts, and it rotates to a new five every time you open the drawer. Tap a hashtag to open its posts, or tap "See all" to jump to Search. If you're browsing without an account, the drawer shows a short greeting with Sign up and Log in in place of the account shortcuts.

How the New Create Sheet Works

In Whistlr V.6, tapping Create opens straight into a Note sheet, so if you came to write, you can start typing right away. The sheet slides up over a dimmed view of the screen you were on.

Note and Community

The top of the sheet has the close button, today's date, and Publish, with Note and Community underneath. Note is a text post for your own audience. Community posts into one of your communities, with its name shown beside yours as you write. Tap between them, or swipe across the top half of the sheet.

Minis, Story, Rooms, and Havens

Along the foot of the sheet is a mode strip: Note, Minis, Story, Rooms, and Havens. Swipe across the lower half of the sheet to move between them. Each mode shows a full-height preview card with a short guidelines note in the top-left corner and a close button in the top-right:

  • Minis: "Make a Mini." Record a short vertical video, then add sounds, effects, and edits.
  • Story: "Share a moment." Post a photo or video up to 60 seconds for your friends.
  • Rooms: "Start a room." Hang out live on audio and invite your friends.
  • Havens: "Create a Haven." Put your spot on the map so your people can find it, using the same sheet layout as a Note.

Going live has moved out of the Create strip for now. Use the LIVE button at the top of Home instead.

Pull to Close

Swipe down anywhere on the Note sheet to close it. If the keyboard is open, the first swipe puts the keyboard away and the next one closes the sheet. The Rooms and Havens cards close the same way, while Minis and Story close with their X. Tapping into your Note hides the mode strip so it doesn't crowd what you're writing.

One more thing changed behind the Create sheet. The same AI-assisted safety check is rolling out to every place you can post or send, from Notes and comments to messages and uploads. If something is blocked, you'll see "Can't post this," and your draft stays where it is so you can edit it.

How Explore and Minis Keep Things Fresh

Two of the quieter changes in Whistlr version 6 share one idea: you should see something new when you come back.

The Explore Grid

Explore lives on Home's top nav and under the search bar on the Search tab. The grid mixes a full-width hero tile, rows of three portrait tiles, and wide tiles that span two columns. Video tiles take turns previewing themselves: two play at a time, muted, each for its first five seconds, then hand off to the next two on screen. In Low Power Mode, it's one at a time. Previews start only when you're scrolling slowly enough to watch, and stop the moment a tile leaves the screen, which keeps your phone cool.

The grid never changes while you're looking at it. Explore swaps in new tiles while it's out of view, when you launch the app or after you've been away for 30 seconds, and tiles you haven't seen yet come first. Next to the search pill are a Saved button for posts you've kept and a chip for your content preferences.

Photo Posts in Minis

Minis isn't only video. A photo post joins the Minis feed when it has more than two photos and a song attached, and at most one photo post shows up every six clips. In Whistlr V.6, those photo posts never repeat:

  • Seen means gone: Once a photo post has reached your screen, it doesn't come back.
  • Across your devices: What you've seen is remembered with your account, so a reinstall or a new phone won't bring old photo posts back.
  • Accounts take turns: After you see one account's photo post, that account's other photo posts sit out for a while, and you'll never get two from the same account in one batch.
  • Nothing shifts under you: Seen posts are cleared when you open or refresh Minis, never while you're watching.

"Nothing kills a feed faster than seeing the same post for the third time. You start to feel like the app ran out of things to show you. So we made a rule: once you've seen it, it's gone. If that means fewer photo posts on a slow day, that's fine with me. I'd rather show you less and have all of it be new."

How Post Detail and Comments Work Now

Tap a post and you land on Post Detail, which was rebuilt in Version 6 around the conversation underneath it.

The Post Detail Screen

  • A pinned top bar: Back, the author's name, an Add Friend link, the time and audience, and the post menu stay at the top as you scroll.
  • Caption first: The caption sits above the media, and photos and videos run edge to edge.
  • Clear counts: Likes, comments, and shares sit in one row under the post.
  • Comment sorting: Comments start on "Most relevant." Tap it to switch to Newest or Oldest.
  • "Comment as" bar: The comment box at the bottom shows whose name you're commenting as, with a button to add a photo or GIF.

Comment Rows and Replies

Each comment row shows the name and the comment with no bubble around it, then the time, Like and Reply, and a thumbs-down for when you're not a fan. Replies tuck under a "View replies" line. The same layout is used on Post Detail, in Minis comments, and in communities. When you type @ or # in a comment, suggestions appear right inside the comment box, and the reply sheet swipes down to reveal the screen behind it.

Post Activity

Want to see who engaged with a post? Hold the heart, or tap the reactions, and the Post activity screen opens. It shows the post at the top, rows for Likes, Reposts, and Quotes, and then everyone who liked, reposted, or quoted it, newest first, with Add Friend right there.

Topic Pages for Hashtags

Tapping a trending hashtag, from Search, a hashtag chip, the "› #Topic" tag, or the side drawer, opens that topic's page. Sort between Top posts and Recent, browse Related profiles, and tap the + to remember the hashtag in your Hashtag favorites.

What Changed on Profiles in Whistlr Version 6

We covered the new profile layout in detail when we talked about cleaner profiles: your name and category on the left, your photo on the right, no banner, and renamed tabs like Lore and Notes. Version 6 builds on that with a few changes to how you get to profiles and what you can do there.

Profile Sneak Peek

Tap someone's avatar or name in Minis, on a post card, or in Post Detail, and a Profile Sneak Peek sheet rises from the bottom, the same way comments do, without pulling you away from what you were watching. Swipe it up, or tap their photo, and it grows into their full profile. Pull the profile back down past the top to return to the peek, and swipe the peek down to close it.

The Replies Tab, Ready on Open

The Replies tab collects your reposts and quotes, including ones made from comments. It now loads before you tap it: your own when the app launches, and other people's as soon as you open their profile.

Move and Scale Your Photo

When you pick a new profile photo or Blip in Edit profile, you now get a "Move and scale" step. Pinch and drag inside the frame, and a "How it looks" preview shows the result at the top of your profile and in the small circles used for Stories, chats, posts, and comments.

Wall Posts

Your Wall is the spot on your profile where you and your friends leave posts for each other. You can post on your own Wall, and mutual friends, people you follow who follow you back, can post there too. In Version 6, Wall posts use the same layout as other posts, the Wall composer is the same grey sheet as a Note, and you can add up to four photos or a GIF. You can pin up to five Wall posts, and you can remove any post on your own Wall.

Why Whistlr Version 6 Feels Faster

A lot of Version 6 is work you'll never see, only feel. The goal was simple: when you open a screen, it should already be there.

Search, Friends, and Messages Open From Cache

  • Search: News categories, hashtags, communities, live streams, songs, and market prices are loaded ahead of time, and every category page is built before you tap it.
  • Friends: Your Friends list appears from what's saved on your phone the moment the app opens, then refreshes quietly.
  • Messages: Your inbox does the same, and handles being offline instead of showing an empty screen.
  • Topic pages: Hashtag pages you've visited are saved, so going back is instant.

Over-the-Air Updates

We turned on over-the-air updates for the iOS app in October, and the 6.1 Android app is built to receive them too. Many fixes now reach you without waiting for a store update. Updates download in the background and apply the next time you open Whistlr. Every update is signed and matched to your app version, and if one ever causes a crash, the app rolls back to the last version that worked on its own. Larger changes to the native parts of the app still arrive as regular updates through the App Store and Google Play.

"People don't notice when an app is fast. They notice when it makes them wait. So a lot of this release is invisible on purpose. Your inbox is just there. Search is just there. You open a profile and it's finished. That's the kind of work I'm proudest of, because the only sign it happened is that nothing got in your way."

Whistlr V.6 on iPad, Android, and the Web

Version 6 isn't only an iPhone story. Here's what it looks like on your other screens.

iPad: Two Panes Side by Side

Turn your iPad sideways and Whistlr splits into two panes. Your tabs stay on the left, whatever you open appears on the right, and a navigation rail runs along the right edge. Sheets and comments open in the other pane instead of covering what you're looking at. Some screens spread across both panes:

  • Nearby: The map on one side, the list on the other.
  • Live streams: The video on one side, the chat on the other.
  • Audio rooms: The stage on one side, the chat on the other.
  • Live shopping: The video on one side, the shop on the other.

Regular iPhones keep the single-screen layout you already know.

Android

Whistlr 6.1 for Android was submitted to Google Play on October 30 and goes live as soon as Google finishes its review. Along with the Version 6 design, it brings proper permission prompts, over-the-air updates, a single clean splash screen, and a round of speed and responsiveness work. A few gestures, like the side drawer, arrived on iPhone and iPad first.

The Web

On the web, profiles, post cards, and the post menu now match the app, including no cover banners and a Replies tab. Settings became a single Settings & privacy page, with a search box, Accounts Center, grouped sections like Your account and Your content and favorites, and a hub with tiles for the settings you visit most. On desktop, the newest update rolling out now adds a left rail whose labels appear on hover, a Notifications panel that slides out from the side, and a Messages pill that opens a mini inbox, with chats docked along the bottom.

Why don't I see the same photo Minis again?

In Whistlr V.6, a photo post in Minis never comes back once it has reached your screen, and that's remembered with your account across devices. After you see one account's photo post, that account's other photo posts also sit out for a while. This keeps Minis fresh instead of repeating the same posts.

What is Profile Sneak Peek on Whistlr?

Profile Sneak Peek is a preview sheet that rises when you tap someone's avatar or name in Minis, on a post card, or in Post Detail. Swipe it up or tap their photo to grow it into the full profile, and pull it back down to return to the peek. Swipe the peek down to close it and go back to what you were doing.
