Chat by Text and Brainstorm Out Loud with Nalani
Chat by Text and Brainstorm Out Loud in in.between — this guide shows how to talk with Nalani in writing or by voice, when to choose each path, and how both stay inside a private dream journal that is never a feed. in.between pairs a private journal with a companion named Nalani. Talk is the second step of Catch → Talk → Keep → Stay: Nalani asks one honest question at a time, and you answer by text in Chat or out loud in Brainstorm. You will learn what each mode is for, how voice fits late-night and bedside use, how the same account works on web, iOS, and desktop, and what the product will not do — no streaks, no social publishing, no sleep scoring. Based on Journey product facts only.
Two Ways to Talk, One Private Room
Chat is the everyday conversation surface: type dreams, leftover feeling, or nothing more than 2am. Brainstorm is the out-loud path for the same companion — speak when your hands are full, the room is dark, or typing would break the fragment. Both modes keep Nalani’s pace: one question at a time, curious first, not a dump of canned interpretation. Neither mode posts anywhere. The journal remains private to you across web, iOS, and desktop.
Voice and text are not competing products. They are two doors into the same Talk step. Catch can begin in either mode — write a scrap, or speak the scrap — then continue with Nalani’s questions in whichever form fits the hour. Keep surfaces (Index, Markers, Case File) still gather recurring people and places afterward. Stay still means no streaks and delete anytime. Choosing Brainstorm does not unlock a social feature set; choosing Chat does not lock you out of Companion Mode.
Nalani asks one honest question at a time. Chat by text, Brainstorm out loud.
Using Chat by Text
Open Chat when you want precision, silence, or a keyboard. Type the fragment as it is — incomplete sentences are normal. Send it, then answer Nalani’s follow-up question in the same thread. Text is ideal when you are at a desk on web or desktop, when others are sleeping nearby and you need quiet, or when you want to re-read what you just caught before you answer. You can move from a short Catch note into a longer Companion Mode conversation without changing products; it is still the same private room.
Using Brainstorm Out Loud
Open Brainstorm when speaking is the lowest-friction way to hold the night. Talk through what you remember while it is still close; let Nalani’s next question arrive as part of the spoken exchange. Brainstorm fits bedside late-night sessions, mornings when your eyes are still adjusting, and any moment when the dream is easier to say than to type. You are not recording for an audience. Voice stays inside your journal and companion history — private to you, not a feed item, not a streak event.
- Chat: Typed conversation for dreams, leftover feeling, or the hour — quiet and re-readable
- Brainstorm: Spoken conversation with the same one-question pace — low friction in the dark
- Shared rules: Private, no feed, no streaks, delete anytime
- Shared companion: Nalani remembers your nights only, across modes
- Shared platforms: Web, iOS, and desktop under one account
- Honest scope: Nalani is AI, not a licensed professional
When to Switch Between Text and Voice
Switch freely inside the same night. Many people Catch out loud in Brainstorm, then refine details in Chat once the fragment has a shape. Others type first and only use Brainstorm when tiredness makes the keyboard feel far away. Companion Mode conversations can live entirely in one mode. Late-night sessions often favor Brainstorm; daytime leftover-feeling check-ins often favor Chat. The product does not punish switching and does not require you to finish in the mode you started.
Voice work in in.between is still Talk, not a separate social live feature and not a public audio feed. There is no audience, no co-hosting, and no discovery surface attached to Brainstorm. That boundary matches the rest of the product: a private dream journal and companion, never a feed. If you need visual Keep tools after a voice session, use Imagine for a still from the night’s atmosphere and Markers to hold those stills over time; Index and Case File remain available for recurring threads — all still private.
Practical Setup Across Devices
On iOS, Brainstorm is often the fastest path from waking to Talk. On desktop or web, Chat usually wins for longer typed sessions, with Brainstorm available when you prefer to think out loud at a mic. Use the same account everywhere so Nalani’s memory of your nights stays continuous whether you spoke or typed. Grant only the device permissions you need for voice when you choose Brainstorm; Chat continues to work without voice. End either mode by leaving the room — no completion ceremony, no streak to protect.
- Bedside: Prefer Brainstorm for Catch and early Talk; switch to Chat if you want to edit wording later
- Desk: Prefer Chat for detail; use Brainstorm when pacing around helps the fragment land
- Late night: Either mode — choose the quieter option for your household
- Aftercare of the night: Optional Keep via Index, Markers, Case File; optional Imagine still
- Pause or delete: Stop anytime; remove material you do not want kept
She is a companion, not a therapist, not an oracle. AI, and we say so.
What Voice and Chat Will Not Claim
Neither Chat nor Brainstorm diagnoses sleep, treats mental health conditions, or replaces licensed care. They help you catch and talk through what showed up, with a companion who stays curious and private. Crisis care in the product drops dream framing and points to 988 without signing off — that is presence and redirection, not clinical practice. Do not invent a social listening party or a public voice feed on top of Brainstorm; those features are not part of in.between. For Companion Mode beyond dream interpretation, see that article. For the full journaling loop, see dream journaling how-to. For midnight-to-4am context, see late-night sessions.
Talk is simple on purpose: one question at a time, text or voice, inside a room that respects your time and history. Use Chat when you want the keys. Use Brainstorm when you want to speak. Keep what recurs, stay without streaks, and delete when you are done. That is how voice and text ship in in.between today — private dream journal, companion Nalani, never a feed.
