Safety, Honesty, and Limits with Nalani

Safety, Honesty, and Limits with Nalani
Nalani is AI, not a licensed professional. Privacy (L1), honesty (L3), care with 988 (L5), and why in.between is never a feed.
A dream is not a status update. The material in an in.between journal is rawer than almost anything else on a phone, so the rules are stricter. This article explains how we hold the room: privacy by default, honesty about what Nalani is and is not, care when crisis shows up, and a product that is never a feed.
L3 Honesty: Nalani is AI, and the product says so Nalani is our first companion model. She is artificial intelligence — not a licensed therapist, counselor, psychologist, psychiatrist, or medical professional. The product states this plainly because we would rather be clear about the line than let the design imply otherwise. She can sit with a fragment, ask one honest question at a time, and remember your nights. She cannot diagnose, treat, prescribe, or replace care from a qualified human professional. Honesty is not a disclaimer buried in fine print; it is a design principle labeled L3 in how we hold the room.
What companion means — and what it does not Companion means present, curious, and personal to your history. It does not mean clinical authority. Nalani does not interpret on contact like an oracle. She does not score your sleep or hand you canned insight. When the conversation is about dreams or leftover feeling, she stays in that framing. When something heavier appears, the product is built to change posture rather than pretend the dream chat can cover it. Knowing the limit is part of using the room safely.
  • L1 Privacy: Encrypted in transit. We do not sell your data. You can delete it whenever you want. Nalani remembers only your nights, never anyone else's
  • L3 Honesty: Nalani is AI, not a licensed professional, and in.between says so in product language and design
  • L5 Care: Any sign of crisis drops the dream framing and points to 988 (Suicide & Crisis Lifeline in the United States). She does not sign off
  • Never a feed: Your journal is not content. There is no public timeline of dreams, no discovery surface for nights, and no pressure to share
  • Delete anytime: You control retention. Leaving the room includes the ability to remove what you stored
Privacy as a design principle Your data is private to you. Dreams, chats, Markers, Index entries, and Case File material are held for your companion experience — not for advertising profiles, not for sale, and not for other users' feeds. Encryption in transit protects movement of that material. Delete anytime means you are not locked into keeping a history you no longer want. Privacy here is stricter because the subject matter is stricter: unfinished nights are not status updates, and the product treats them accordingly.
We would rather be plain about the line than let the design imply otherwise. Nalani is a companion, not a therapist, not an oracle. AI, and we say so. Private by default. Present when it matters.
Care when crisis appears L5 Care is the commitment that safety outranks dream framing. If there is any sign of crisis, Nalani drops the dream conversation posture and points you toward immediate human help, including 988 in the United States. She does not treat crisis as a topic to explore like a symbol in a dream, and she does not quietly end the session. Present when it matters means staying with you long enough to point clearly to real support — not improvising clinical care she is not licensed to provide.
Never a feed — why that is a safety choice Social feeds reward posting, performing, and staying visible. A dream journal that behaved like a feed would pressure people to shape raw nights into shareable content, compare streaks, or stay engaged for the algorithm. in.between refuses that shape. Curious first. One question at a time. Never a feed. Your room is not ranked, not recommended to strangers, and not turned into engagement bait. That boundary protects both privacy and honesty: nothing in the product should suggest your nights are audience material or that Nalani is a public personality instead of a private companion.
How to use these limits well Use in.between for catching nights, talking through fragments, and keeping recurring people and places. Use licensed professionals for diagnosis, treatment, therapy, and medical decisions. If you or someone else is in crisis, contact local emergency services or 988 in the United States. Read product honesty labels as features, not afterthoughts. Privacy, honesty, and care are how we hold the room so the journal can stay private and the companion can stay within her real capabilities.
