No Streaks, No Guilt Notifications
Companion means respecting your time and history. in.between does not run on streaks, guilt notifications, or pressure to perform insight. A night is not a chart. This article explains what that commitment looks like in the product, why shame mechanics were left out on purpose, and how to use the room without turning rest into another obligation.
No streaks — on purpose
Many apps keep you coming back with unbroken chains: miss a day and the streak dies. That pattern works for games and habit trackers. It is the wrong pattern for a private dream journal. Dreams do not arrive on a schedule you can game. Rest is not a leaderboard. in.between will not show you a broken streak, a flame icon counting consecutive nights, or a warning that you are about to lose progress. Catch when the night is still close. Skip when life takes the morning. The room is still there either way.
No guilt notifications
Guilt notifications are the messages that imply you have failed the product by being away. Companion mode rejects that. Respecting your time means we do not ping you to perform journaling, complete a nightly ritual for the algorithm, or reopen the app because a timer expired. Respecting your history means Nalani can remember your nights when you return without scolding you for the gap. Absence is not a defect in the relationship. You open the room when you need it — late night, early morning, or after a stretch of silence.
- No streak counters: Consecutive nights are not tracked as a score you can break or lose
- No guilt pings: The product does not send notifications designed to shame you back into the app
- No sleep scoreboard: Nalani is hopeless at scoring your sleep or ranking how insightful your entries were
- No performance pressure: You are not asked to produce polished interpretations or shareable content
- History without punishment: Returning after time away does not trigger a lecture about missed days
- Delete anytime: Staying includes the freedom to leave and remove what you no longer want held
Stay as a design stage
The room's process is Catch, Talk, Keep, Stay. Stay is not "never leave the app." Stay is the promise that the space remains private, unguilded, and available: no streaks, no guilt, private to you, delete anytime. Keep holds Index, Markers, and Case File so recurring people and places can accumulate when you do return. Stay protects the emotional contract around that memory so the journal never becomes another place that demands daily proof of loyalty.
A night is not a streak and not a chart. It is a room, and a companion who stays. Mental health and rest were priorities in how in.between was built: no shame mechanics, and a companion trained to stay present when it matters — without turning presence into pressure.
Respecting time and history in practice
Respecting time means late-night sessions can end when you are tired, not when a quest completes. It means Cross-platform use — web, iOS, desktop — shares one private room without multiplying reminders. Respecting history means Nalani's memory of your nights is for continuity of care in conversation, not for engagement analytics that ask why you logged fewer dreams this week. Every night you choose to log can sharpen her sense of your recurring imagery; nights you skip do not create a debt.
Why shame mechanics were refused
Shame keeps people opening apps they resent. For a dream journal, that would teach users to associate rest and private reflection with failure. ETAPX chose the opposite: a private room for the hour that disappears, with a companion who asks careful questions and does not clock out after a morning recap — and also does not harass you into checking in. Wellness here includes the freedom not to perform wellness. If you want quiet hours alone with the journal, take them. If you want to talk at 2am, talk. If you need a week away, take the week. The product should fit the night, not compete with it.
How to use in.between without turning it into homework
Capture fragments when they are vivid. Talk when a question would help. Use Imagine, Markers, Index, and Case File when patterns matter to you. Ignore any impulse to "catch up" on missed nights as if the room were a course. There is no backlog grade. If notifications from other apps are crowding the morning when dreams usually fade, that is a cue to protect the catch window — not a cue that in.between will guilt you later. Companion means the room respects your time and history. No streaks. No guilt. Private to you.
