How the Room Works in in.between
Catch, Talk, Keep, and Stay — how the private dream journal and companion Nalani work together, one honest question at a time, without streaks or charts.
in.between is a private dream journal with a companion named Nalani, built for the hours between waking and rest. It is a room, not a feed: you catch what showed up in the night, talk it through one honest question at a time, keep the pieces that return, and stay without streaks, charts, or pressure to perform. This guide explains how that room is meant to work.
Why the room exists Most dreams are gone minutes after waking. The people, the places, and the leftover feeling get crowded out by the first notification. ETAPX built in.between for that exact window — a private place to hold what usually disappears, and a companion who sits in it with you. Curious first. One question at a time. Never a feed. A night is not a streak and not a chart. It is a room, and a companion who stays.
Catch: write or speak while the night is still close The first move is simple. Open the journal and capture the fragment before breakfast takes it — a face, a hallway, a feeling you cannot name yet. You can type or speak. You do not need a full narrative. Unedited and unfinished is expected. Catch is for proximity, not polish: get the night down while it is still close enough to touch.
Talk: one honest question at a time After you catch something, Nalani does not interpret on contact. She does not hand you the average of every dream she has ever seen. She asks what the face was doing, where you were standing, whether the house has shown up before. Chat is the everyday conversation — dreams, leftover feeling, or nothing more than 2am. Brainstorm lets you talk out loud when typing feels too far from the night. In both modes she stays with one question until the fragment has a shape, then asks one more.
  • Chat: The everyday conversation for dreams, leftover feeling, or quiet late-night company when you need someone present
  • Brainstorm: Speak out loud when the night is still dissolving and typing would slow you down
  • Imagine: One still from a night's atmosphere — a feeling rendered visually, not a literal scene recreation
  • Markers: The gallery of those stills, a visual trail of your own imagery over time
  • Index: People, places, and feelings that keep coming back, held so they can accumulate instead of vanishing
  • Case File: Where recurring threads gather so nights become an ongoing story rather than isolated entries
Keep and Stay: memory without performance Keep is Index, Markers, and Case File working together so recurring people and places have somewhere to land. Stay is the design promise around that memory: no streaks, no guilt notifications, private to you, delete anytime. Nalani remembers only your nights — never anyone else's. The room does not score your sleep, ask you to perform insight, or turn a night into content. It holds what you bring and stays when you return.
AI is good at answers. Nights need questions. Nalani is brilliant at sitting with a fragment until it has a shape, then asking one more honest question. She is hopeless at scoring your sleep, performing insight, or turning a night into content. She is a companion, not a therapist, not an oracle — AI, and we say so.
How to use the room in practice Start with Catch when something is still vivid. Move to Talk when you want help holding a fragment without rushing to meaning. Use Imagine when atmosphere matters more than plot. Return to Index and Case File when the same person or place keeps appearing across nights. Leave when you are done. There is no daily quota, no broken streak, and no chart waiting for you tomorrow. The room is simple on purpose: four ways to hold what showed up, and none of them ask you to perform.
What the room is not in.between is not a social feed, a sleep scoreboard, a public dream diary, or a replacement for licensed care. It will not push you to post, compete, or maintain a chain of check-ins. If you want a private journal and a companion who asks careful questions about your own nights, you are in the right place. If you want streaks, leaderboards, or content to share, this room was not built for that — and that is intentional.
