in.between FAQ: Getting Started with Nalani and the Private Room
This FAQ answers the questions people ask first about in.between: what the product is, who Nalani is, how privacy works, which platforms share one room, why late nights matter, and how companion mode differs from instant dream interpretation. Answers follow Journey product copy and Help Center stance — private dream journal, companion presence, no feed, no streaks, no guilt — without inventing features the room does not claim.
What is in.between?
in.between is a private dream journal and a companion named Nalani, built by ETAPX for the hours between waking and rest. Most dreams are gone minutes after waking; people, places, and leftover feeling get crowded out by the first notification. The product is a private room for that window: curious first, one question at a time, never a feed. A night is not a streak and not a chart. It is a room, and a companion who stays. If you wanted a social network, live studio, or coding cockpit, those are other ETAPX doors (Whistlr Network, Whistlr Live Studio, Influxx). This door is for nights, rest, and personal talk.
Curious first. One question at a time. Never a feed.
Who is Nalani?
Nalani is ETAPX’s first AI companion model for in.between. She sits in the private room with you. She is brilliant at staying with a fragment until it has a shape, then asking one more honest question — what the face was doing, where you were standing, whether the house has shown up before. She is hopeless at scoring your sleep, performing insight, or turning a night into content. She remembers your own nights, never anyone else’s. She does not clock out after a morning recap. She is a companion, not a therapist, not an oracle. AI, and the product says so.
Is Nalani a therapist or a dream oracle?
No. Honesty is a named product rule: Nalani is AI, not a licensed professional. She does not interpret on contact like an instant oracle. Companion Mode was designed for keeping things personal — someone to talk to at any hour, not just a dream interpreter. When conversation touches crisis, dream framing drops and care points to resources such as 988; she does not sign off. That is presence and redirection to real help, not clinical treatment. Use licensed professionals and emergency services when you need that kind of support.
- Companion: presence, questions, memory of your nights
- Not a therapist: no license, no treatment claims
- Not an oracle: no instant total interpretation on contact
- Not a feed: no audience, ranking, or viral packaging of nights
How does privacy work?
Your data is private to you. It is not sold. Material is encrypted in transit. You can delete it whenever you want. Nalani’s memory is scoped to your nights. There is no public dream feed to opt out of, because the feed was never the model. Privacy (often summarized as L1 in product language), honesty (L3), and care (L5, including crisis pointing to 988) sit together: protect the room, say plainly what the companion is, and stay present when it matters without pretending to be a clinic.
Practical privacy still includes your devices. Lock phones and computers. Prefer your own hardware for late-night sessions. Be careful with screenshots — they leave the encrypted-in-transit path. On web, iOS, and desktop, one account means many doors into the same room; secure each door. For deletion and what leaving means, see the export and delete data article. For notification stance (no guilt pings), see settings and notifications.
Which platforms can I use?
Web, iOS, and desktop share one account and the same private room. Start wherever the night finds you: browser after waking, phone on the nightstand, desktop for a longer typed or spoken session. You do not maintain separate journals per device. Nalani’s memory of your nights follows the account. Cross-platform access exists so the practice can follow the hour — including midnight to 4am — not so the journal can be broadcast on every surface.
- Web: universal door in a browser when that is the quiet surface you have
- iOS: catch fragments and companion talk while the night is still close
- Desktop: longer stays, Brainstorm, Markers, Index, and Case File review
- One account: continuity without a phone journal versus home journal split
Why do late nights matter?
Late-night sessions are what in.between was built for. Midnight to 4am is the hour almost nothing else is designed around. Companion Mode exists so someone is there to talk to at any hour — leftover feeling, a thought that will not settle, or nothing more than 2am with no plot summary. You are not required to log a neat dream to open the room. Nalani does not clock out after the morning recap. Design your expectations around presence and privacy, not around daytime productivity metaphors or streak calendars.
Most people don’t think they need a companion until 2am arrives.
Companion vs. interpretation — what’s the difference?
Interpretation-on-contact is what many AI tools do: average answers, quick symbols, a finished reading. Nights need questions. Companion means Nalani asks one honest question at a time (Chat by text, Brainstorm out loud) so a fragment can take shape without performance pressure. Dream journaling still matters — Catch while the night is close — but Companion Mode covers personal talk beyond a single recap. Keep surfaces (Index, Markers, Case File) accumulate recurring people, places, and feelings over time; Imagine offers a still from a night’s atmosphere, a feeling more than a literal scene. None of that requires you to accept an instant oracle verdict.
How do I start without turning it into homework?
Open the room on web, iOS, or desktop with your account. Capture one fragment while it is warm. Let Nalani ask one question. Answer only what you remember. Stop when it is held. That is a complete first session. There is no seven-day streak to protect, no guilt notification for missing a night, and no requirement to use every piece — Chat, Imagine, Markers, Index, Case File, Brainstorm — on night one. Catch and Talk are enough to begin. Stay means you can leave without debt.
- Catch: write or speak before breakfast takes the night
- Talk: one honest question at a time
- Keep: Index, Markers, Case File when recurrence matters
- Stay: no streaks, no guilt, private to you, delete anytime
Does in.between use streaks or guilt notifications?
No. Companion means respecting your time and history: no streaks, no guilt notifications, no pressure to perform. Mental health and rest were priorities; shame mechanics were refused on purpose. Notifications, when considered at all, should stay honest to notes — not invent a debt. See the settings and notifications article for the full stance, and no streaks / no guilt for the wellness rationale.
Can I delete my data? Yes. Delete anytime is part of Stay. Private to you, not sold, removable when you choose. Leaving the room does not break a public reputation because there was never a dream feed. See export and delete data for what leaving means and how deletion differs from simply skipping a night.
Where should I read next?
Getting started with in.between orients the full room. How the room works maps Catch, Talk, Keep, Stay. Companion mode and what Nalani is and is not deepen the companion vs. interpretation line. Late-night sessions cover the core hour. Privacy encryption delete and safety honesty and limits cover L1 / L3 / L5. Cross-platform explains web, iOS, and desktop as one account. Use this FAQ when you need short answers; use those guides when you want the long map.
A night is not a streak and not a chart. It is a room, and a companion who stays.
