App Store Permissions Disclosure
Whistlr Network requests only the permissions necessary to provide you with the best possible experience while maintaining your privacy and security. We believe in complete transparency about what permissions we request, why we need them, and how you can control them. Every permission serves a specific purpose that enhances your Whistlr experience, and you always have the option to grant or deny permissions based on your comfort level.
Camera and Photo Library Access: Sharing Your Moments
Whistlr requests access to your camera and photo library so you can capture and share photos and videos directly within the app. Whether you're posting to Chattr, creating Stories, or sharing content in Minis, camera access enables seamless content creation without leaving Whistlr. Photo library access allows you to select existing photos and videos to share with your community. You can revoke these permissions at any time through your device settings, though some features may be limited without camera access.
When you grant camera access, Whistlr only accesses your camera when you actively choose to take a photo or video within the app. We never access your camera in the background or without your explicit action. Photo library access is similarly limited to when you're selecting content to share. All photos and videos remain private until you choose to post them, and you maintain complete control over what you share and with whom.
Location Services: Connecting with Your Local Community
Location access enables Nearby features that help you discover local content, connect with your community, and find events happening around you. Location services are completely optional - you can use Whistlr fully without sharing your location. When enabled, we use approximate location rather than precise coordinates to protect your privacy, and you can disable location sharing at any time through your privacy settings.
- Microphone Access: Required for recording videos with audio, voice messages, and live streaming. Microphone is only active when you're recording content, never in the background
- Notifications: Keep you informed about messages, comments, and important updates from your community. Customize notification preferences in Settings to control what you receive
- Contacts: Optional permission to help you find friends who are already on Whistlr. We never access your contacts without permission, and you can disable this anytime
- Storage Access: Allows saving photos and videos you create in Whistlr, downloading content for offline viewing, and managing your media library within the app
- Network Access: Essential for connecting to Whistlr's servers, loading content, and syncing your account across devices. This permission is required for basic app functionality
- Device Information: Used to optimize app performance for your specific device, ensure compatibility, and provide technical support when needed. No personal information is collected
- App Installation Source: Helps us understand how users discover Whistlr so we can improve our services and ensure app security. This information is anonymized and never linked to your personal account
- Background Refresh: Keeps your feed updated and delivers notifications even when the app isn't actively open. You can disable this to save battery life if preferred
Your privacy is fundamental to everything we do at Whistlr. We request permissions only when they're necessary for features you want to use, and we're transparent about how each permission enhances your experience. You're always in control - you can grant or deny permissions, change your mind later, and use Whistlr with only the permissions you're comfortable with. Our goal is to provide you with powerful social tools while respecting your privacy choices.
Managing Your Permissions: You have complete control over all permissions through both Whistlr's privacy settings and your device settings. In Whistlr, navigate to Settings > Privacy to see all permissions and adjust them based on your preferences. You can also manage permissions through your device's system settings, where you can grant or revoke access for any permission at any time. Changing permissions may limit some features, but you'll always be able to use Whistlr's core functionality.
Privacy-First Design: How We Protect Your Data
Every permission we request is designed with privacy in mind. We collect only the minimum data necessary for each feature to function, we never sell your personal information, and we use industry-standard encryption to protect your data. Location data is approximate rather than precise, camera access is only active when you're using it, and all permissions can be revoked without affecting your ability to use Whistlr's core features. Your privacy isn't optional - it's built into everything we do.
Understanding Permission Prompts: When Whistlr requests a permission, you'll see a clear explanation of why we need it and how it enhances your experience. Take your time to read these prompts - they're designed to help you make informed decisions about your privacy. You can always grant permissions later if you change your mind, and you can revoke them at any time. There's no pressure to grant permissions immediately, and you can explore Whistlr's features to see what works best for you.
